Are the people in the comments unaware that this is based on a true story? Have you read the book? Mennonite women (who I would hardly call "privileged" or "liberal," they were living in a colony in Bolivia and the colony was originally established by Mennonites from Canada and Mexico. ) were drugged, raped in their sleep and gaslit about their experience. For YEARS. 8 men were arrested and imprisoned. How is this "propaganda?" Should this story not be told simply because they're white? WTH is wrong with you people?

I guess someone forgot to tell this one that the FOLK TALE has always been a vehicle for political activism. The original records list THOUSANDS of 'Robin Hood' signatures from its time, making the name itself the period equivalent of 'John Smith'. If you were a bi or trans-FtM, it's EXACTLY the name you'd use to stay off the radar. The ROYAL aspect didn't get added to the myth and legend until MUCH later in the retellings because royals slumming for recreation was too trendy in the courts to leave the peasants their folk hero. The whole REASON the Robin Hood myth was so popular in the same era the courtiers loved King Aurthur was that the low born had their own hero that would stand up to extreme taxation and mass conscription during the crusader era that helped spread disease, plague, food shortages, labor shortages, social injustice, and lots of general misery for the surfs. In itsits earliest recordings, the variations we see through media retellings in this age were already normal because each community had its own version for its local issues. You can thank the mutations for the duration of the folk tale because the anonymous social justice warrior can be a metaphoric hero for any people desperate for hope.
